What We Learned: Supporting Transition to Secondary School

At our recent Consortium Sheridan Snashall Associate Director, AfC Pupil Support presented the programme the Education team has with schools to support transition to secondary school. They will be visiting schools over this next term to see what has helped and continue to work closely with schools. The intention is to ensure best practice from schools who manage transition well, is rolled out in all schools in the area.

In addition, there are a number of things that parent carers can do to support their child as early as year 5 to help the child adjust. This is the slide he shared with the Parent Carer Consortium.

Some children attend activities and taster classes before the school year starts. It is also worth ensuring that the communication between schools is being managed well. The secondary schools have forms they complete for students on SEN Support and with EHCPs. They will spend time before your child arrives at the school preparing for them and will often meet with your child early in the new year.

If you have concerned, it is a good idea initially to be discussed with the class teacher and SENCO at the specific school.

We have also done some work with SENDIASS who updated their website with more helpful information around preparing for Secondary School SEN School Transitions – Richmond & Kingston SENDIASS
